Living in New York often feels like an endless series of demonic minigames with occasional fun parts; one that irregularly but repeatedly occurs for me is going to the airport. Will the A be running reliably enough to get to JFK? Will there be insane exit ramp traffic outside La Guardia, that keeps you on the Q70 SBS a half hour longer than you thought? How long will the security lines be? How triggered are you by the thought of your worst airport failure, and how much time do you now feel is the minimum to get to the terminal via your preferred route? I'm into all of it; logistics and planning against the chaos and relentlessness of the city are the absolute core of what living in it "is" to me.
In JFK International Airport's Terminal 5, which serves Aer Lingus, Cape Air, Hawaiian Airlines, TAP Portugal, and JetBlue, there is a Ron Jon Surf Shop. When I'm flying out of Terminal 5, after walking from my house on President St at Columbia up to the Carroll St F/G, which I take to Jay (via F) or Hoyt (via G), then switch to a Far Rockaway-Mott Ave branch A, get off at Howard Beach, switch to the AirTrain, get off at Terminal 5, and complete a security check, only then do I see the Ron Jon; it means I am now "out of town." When I'm flying into Terminal 5, seeing the Ron Jon marks the point at which I'm "back in New York."
The Ron Jon in Terminal 5 became an intense point of focus beginning in 2015, when Jeff tweeted this:
Aaron later responded:
Since this tweet it has become a lucky sidequest within the JFK Terminal 5 variant of the airport minigame to post photos at the Ron Jon to what is now the Ron Jon thread. Because the thread is now slightly branching and it can be tricky to find the last post to reply to (I might have even missed one or two?!), and I am not confident that this thing I like will last forever on twitter, I thought it would be good to make a webpage for both utility and archival purposes.
Here's the rest of the Ron Jon thread, which I feel exemplifies a good use of twitter, current with this page's last updated date:
