Citizens of a Forgotten World

Single-day mini me & Shea'la drew together in our apartment in 2015. I printed between 50 and 100 of them off of the laserprinter at my job at the time, which I distributed for free largely by mail.

I'm generally disinclined to post zine interiors online - that they aren't online is, for me, often part of the appeal - but I'm making the exception here for a few reasons.

- Periodically I have to relearn to love/make drawings again, and this tends to accompany broader changes in what I'm working on and thinking about. In February 2015, Citizens exemplified that; it's not a coincidence that it's the bottommost item on the front page of this website. It marks the beginning of my personal "second section" of living in New York, just as the "third section" (the current section) began with LSDZ.

- Thinking about the apartment on President St is a big feeling. Citizens, for me, has always been the project that has so far come the closest to approximating its energy, or to being an ode to it. I like that putting it online gives me something I can point to when I next find myself talking about that.

- My longer-term approach to drawing zines up to this point had been to generate drawings and then collage them into pages & arrange them in Photoshop. Citizens turns away from this, with this explicit notion of "no photoshop overdubs" - all drawings are as-is. At the time I was only just barely beginning to work thru the same transition in painting - away from abstract accumulations, toward a more intentional, compositional approach to making pictures.

- I have always loved the 1/8th-size zine format, and I feel that this is easily the best entry I've made in the category :)

All that said, even still, I'm presenting these pages "uncut" from the printer, rather than assembled into books, to preserve the important distinction between this being a webpage and the zines being zines.
